What do you get when you mix old buildings, modern redevelopment, and fashionable aesthetics? You can have these answers in your city when you read this article. For the first time ever in the history of public buildings in Los Angeles, a majority of refurbished apartments are now specifically for tenants who identify as gay men. This has been designated the Gay Fawcett Historic District in addition to being known for its shopping centers and boutiques that are all trending colors of red, pink, purple, teal green and blue. This brownstone-styled historic building includes 135 loft residences with living areas ranging from 925 square feet to 1,700 square feet each with two bedrooms to three bedrooms per unit. Each residence also has a garage and a swimming pool. The design and structure of these renovations and additions were made to support the Gay Fawcett Historic District as an enticing and stylish place for gay men to live. The residences were designed by the architecture firm, Perkins + Will that is based in Los Angeles, California. The building itself was constructed in 1924 by J.E. Faiss & Company using the Roman Revival architectural style for its design. Faiss Company was known as a "general contractor" whose services included interior decorations, plumbing, electrical wiring and window treatments for this building's construction at that time. From 1925 to 1926, the building’s interior decorations were completed by the architectural firm of Los Angeles architect Lawrence Halprin. This Los Angeles architectural firm has continued to design various homes in Southern California since that time. The building was designed with an emphasis on its more modernity with two stories above ground level making it high enough to be able to have a mezzanine level. The first floor of this building had more Spanish American Arts influences which made this more suitable for the residents who lived there at that time. Some have even reported that this was a gay social club because of how it gave an upscale feel to some residents who were gay men at that time during the 1940s and 1950s. These original residents who had more exposure to the arts and crafts movement were known as the “Artistic Bohemians” who formed their own club called, "Alcazar Art Club." This club was formed mostly of young gay men who were interested in the Arts and Crafts movement. They had held social events with other like-minded young gay men where they would often paint murals on their murals on the walls of local landmarks. These murals are still there for people to see today. One mural can be seen on the side wall of one of the historic restaurants in Hollywood, California called “Wurstkuche” located at 675 North La Brea Avenue. This building is also known for the “Totem Pole Mural” that is on the side wall of the historic restaurant in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Hollywood, California called “Wurstkuche.” It was started by artists who belonged to the Alcazar Art Club and they finished painting it in 1941. This mural has been photographed and shared on social media many times. A short documentary film was made about the mural in 2013 by Dennis Puga and Eric Brown entitled: “Totem: Hollywood’s Original Gayborhood. cfa1e77820
